Editorial Methodology
How we rate gold IRA companies
Our rankings are editorial opinion built on a consistent, public-source methodology. This page explains exactly what we weigh, how we research, and where our compensation fits — so you can judge our judgments.
Authorship
Who writes these ratings
Our reviews are produced by the Gold401k Editorial Team — a group of writers and researchers who specialize in retirement-account rollovers and precious-metals investing. We publish under a team byline rather than inventing a single named 'expert,' because the research, fact-checking, and editing behind each rating is genuinely a collective effort.
We are not licensed financial, tax, or legal advisers, and nothing we publish is personalized advice. Our value is in clearly organized, well-sourced, general education that helps you ask the right questions before you talk to a provider or a professional.
Scoring
The criteria we weigh
Each company earns an editorial score out of 5. That score reflects a weighted blend of the factors below. Weights are directional, not a rigid formula — we use judgment, and we explain the reasoning in each company's pros and cons.
Fee transparency
Whether setup, custodial, and storage fees are clearly disclosed, and how predictable the all-in annual cost is. We favor published flat schedules over fees that require a sales call.
Reputation & track record
BBB rating and accreditation, operating history, and any documented regulatory or legal actions drawn from public records.
Storage & custody
Quality of depository partners (e.g. Delaware Depository, Brink's, Loomis), segregated-storage options, and custodian relationships.
Account minimum & accessibility
How attainable the entry point is for typical rollover investors, and whether smaller accounts are served fairly.
Metals selection & buyback
Breadth of IRS-approved metals offered and the strength and clarity of any buyback commitment.
Education & support
Quality of educational resources and the level of ongoing, no-pressure account support.
Research
How we source facts
Company facts — founding year, headquarters, BBB rating and accreditation, account minimums, fee notes, metals offered, and storage and custodian partners — are compiled from reputable public sources: official company websites, BBB.org, regulatory filings, and well-known finance publications. When a specific fact is not publicly verifiable, we mark it "Not publicly disclosed" rather than guess.
No fabricated reviews, ever
Disclosure
Independence & how we make money
We are an independent publisher that earns referral compensation from some of the companies featured on this site, including our top-rated partner. This compensation may influence which companies we list, where they appear, and how prominently. Our ratings reflect our own editorial judgment based on publicly available information; they are opinions, not guarantees, and are not personalized investment advice. Always do your own research and verify a company's credentials (e.g., BBB rating, registrations, depository partners) before investing.

Maintenance
Keeping ratings current
Fees, minimums, and corporate records change. We review the underlying facts periodically and stamp each company profile and reference page with a "last updated" date. This methodology page was last updated June 14, 2026. If you spot something out of date, the facts on a provider's own site and BBB.org should always be treated as authoritative.
This content is for general education only and is not financial, tax, legal, or investment advice. Investing in precious metals carries risk, including loss of principal. Consult a licensed professional before making decisions.
